THE
GOSPEL:
1 Corinthians 15:1
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached
unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye
stand.
The word,
"Gospel" means, "Good News". The gospel of Jesus Christ is the hope
of all those who trust in Him. Even though it is a relatively simple
message, I had to come to grips with questions like, "Do I believe
that the bible is true?", and, "What do I need to be saved from?",
as well as many others. Although it didn't come together in this
order, I would like to take you on a journey through the same
thought process that I had gone through that led me to trust in
Christ as my Saviour and Lord.
THE BIBLE:
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in
them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify
of me.
2 Timothy 3:15 And
that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are
able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus.
1 Corinthians
15:3-4, For I delivered unto you
first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for
our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and
that he rose again the third day according to the
scriptures:
These verses of
scripture taught me what the bible says about itself, that it is
truth and it is where I could find the way to eternal
life.
2 Timothy 3:16 All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness:
Romans 10:17 So
then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of
God.
The bible is God's
word. These passages [and many more] have taught me that the bible
is the only place to find the words of God.
II
Timothy 2:15, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman
that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.
This passage tells me
that I can know the truth if I diligently study God's word. I also
understood that I may need some help, like the Ethiopian Eunuch in
Acts 8:26-40 [vs. 31 specifically].
~Now,
that I have determined the source of truth [the bible], I was
prepared to dig and discover the truth.~
WHO IS
GOD?:
God Is The
Creator
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God
created the heaven and the earth.
Exodus 20:11 For in
six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in
them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the
sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Colossians 1:16 For
by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in
earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions,
or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and
for him:
God is
the creator. These passages revealed that He is intimately
interested in me because I was created by Him and for Him. That fact
made me want to understand what it was that God wanted me to do, or
for what purpose was I put on this planet.
God Is All
Powerful:
Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were
the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and
as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord
God omnipotent reigneth.
Revelation 1:8 I am
Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which
is, and which was, and which is to come, the
Almighty.
Psalm 8:3
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and
the stars, which thou hast ordained;
Colossians 1:17 And
he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
There is
no one or nothing more powerful than God. Not only did He create all
things, but without His power, it would all fall away. There is no
higher power than God [nor equal]. Knowing this made me a little
afraid, but also increased my hunger to know God better.
God Is Ever-Present:
Hebrews 4:13 Neither is there any
creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked
and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to
do.
Psalm
139:7-12 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee
from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I
make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of
the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there
shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say,
Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light
about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night
shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to
thee.
No one
can hide from God. He knows my every thought, action and where I
have been. ~Knowing that God is with me always has become a great
comfort to me after trusting in His Son, but was quite convicting
[or unnerving] prior to that.~
He Is All-Knowing:
Romans 11:33-36 O
the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how
unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For
who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his
counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be
recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him,
are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
Psalm
33:11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his
heart to all generations.
There are no ideas or
concepts that are unknown to God. He knows everything and is
surprised by nothing. ~This truth taught me that even though the
times have changed [and continue to do so], God is still relevant.
In fact God's word explains why bad things are happening, and why
people call that which is evil, "good".
He Is Love:
1 John 4:8 He that
loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved
us.
At the core of God's
plan is Love. He wants His creation to Love Him with all our heart,
mind, soul and might. And, He wants us to Love others as we Love
ourselves. He wants us to call Him, "Father", but we cannot if we
are not in His family. Upon this discovery, I began to yearn for His
love. As much as I had been loved in this world, there yet remained
an emptiness, a void, a yearning to be perfectly loved by someone
who can only be God.
MY SIN:
What Is Sin?:
James
4:17 Therefore to him that
knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is
sin.
The word Sin means to
"Miss the mark". According to the scriptures, anytime I knew what
was right and didn't do it, that was a sin.
Where Did Sin Come
From?:
Romans
5:12 Wherefore, as by one man
sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed
upon all men, for that all have
sinned:
This passage tells the
sum of the story; Adam was the first man. He was created in a
sinless state "very good". But he and his wife, Eve, disobeyed God
when they ate the fruit of the tree called, "the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil", which God told them not to do. The
result was death and judgement for Adam and Eve. And this also
"passed upon all men" [you and me], meaning that we are all born
into this same sin. This history can be found in the book of
Genesis, chapters 1
through 5.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
ABOUT MY SIN:
Genesis 2:17 But of
the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of
it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely
die.
Romans 6:23 For
the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Matthew 25: 41 Then
shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye
cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his
angels:
When Adam and Eve
sinned, they brought death to all mankind. These passages told me
that I was dead in my trespasses and sin, and I needed to be saved
from death and judgment [everlasting fire/hell].
~Life in this sinful
state, is like hanging off of a cliff by your fingertips, with no
one else around. And, unless you are saved, death is inevitable. I
remember feeling helpless and guilty.
~Having already come to
the conclusion that the bible is true, I now had to come to terms
with my condition. I either had to seek salvation or decide that I
would take eternal punishment.
~I wanted heaven, I
didn't want hell. I wanted to be loved by God, and I wanted to love
Him too, and call Him, Father.
~I felt
like a child that had run away from home, and now I wanted to go
home to my Father, but didn't know the way.
WHAT MUST I DO TO BE
SAVED?:
John 3:16-18 For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on
him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned
already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God.
1 John 4:10 Herein
is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his
Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 Corinthians
15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all
that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins
according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he
rose again the third day according to the
scriptures:
Romans 10: 9-10
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou
shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:13 For
whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved.
> God [Who is Love],
because of His deep love for you and me, sent His Son, Jesus, to
become a man and to take upon Himself the punishment [death] of the
world, so that the world, through Him, might be saved.
> Jesus paid the
price with His precious blood. He suffered, bled and died on the
cross to take away our sins. They buried Him, and three days later,
He arose, victorious over death.
> I understood that
because of my sin, I was heading toward death and judgment, and away
from God, Who desired to call me His Son. I also understood that
Jesus paid the price for my sins, and all that I had to do was
believe and call on Him for salvation, and I would be saved. That is
what I did.
> I said something
very much like, "Oh God, I am a sinner. And, I know what that means,
that I am heading down the path of death and judgment. Dear God, I
know that Jesus paid the price for my sins, and now I am asking in
the best way I know, please save me through the blood of your Son,
Jesus Christ, amen".
> And
He did.
WHAT COMES NEXT?:
> I began to live for
Jesus, my Savior, and made Him the Lord of my life.
> I got help. I found
a bible-believing church and began to learn under one of the Elders.
> I dealt with many
trials [see the book of James], and God brought victory and helped
me to grow through them.
> I learned what
God's will was for me as a Christian, as a husband, a father, a
friend, a worker.
> I
began to teach others what I had learned. I shared my testimony with
people and eventually began to help other new Christians grow in the
Grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to
Him be glory both now and forever, amen.
A QUESTION FOR
YOU:
What is your story?
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the
faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that
Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? What is your story?
WAS THIS
HELPFUL?
